What Are Stone Railings?

Stone railings are safety facilities made of natural stone, combining protective functions with aesthetic value. Their earliest form can be traced back to the rudiments of ritual vessel stands in the Zhou Dynasty. Reclining balustrades appeared in the Han Dynasty, and stone railings gradually became widespread during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. Common materials include granite, bluestone, and marble, as well as sandstone and snowflake white (grass white jade). Different stone properties are selected based on the usage scenario; for example, granite is often used for outdoor bridges, while bluestone is preferred for antique-style buildings.

As a safety facility, stone railings form physical protection through components such as columns, blocks, column heads, base plates, and balustrade panels, effectively preventing pedestrians from falling and vehicles from deviating. The height of the railings (100-120cm) and the open space distance (≤12cm) both conform to ergonomic standards.
